What is Levulan Photodynamic Therapy?

Levulan Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) is performed by applying a topical photo sensitizer called Levulan (20% 5-aminolevulinic acid-ALA), to the skin. ALA is a natural substance found throughout the body.

Who is a candidate for PDT?

Patients with actinic keratosis, diffuse acne, severe oily skin, moderate to severe sun damage and textural irregularities.

How is the treatment done?

After cleansing the face, Levulan is applied to the skin with a specially designed applicator. After an average incubation time of ½ to 2 hours the skin is exposed to a light source to activate the Levulan. When Levulan enters the targeted tissue site and is exposed to the light source, it produces molecules of oxygen which destroy the targeted tissue cells leaving the surrounding tissue unharmed.

What is the post treatment care?

It is imperative to avoid sun exposure for the first 24 hours after your treatment. It is necessary to use a physical sunblock for 2 weeks after each treatment. We will recommend an appropriate sunblock. You will be instructed to bring a wide brimmed hat to wear home. You will leave with a physical sunblock on the treated skin.

What are the possible side effects?

Redness, swelling, peeling and a mild discomfort are common side effects. Uncommon side effects include bruising, infection, scarring, and hyper or hypo pigmentation.

How many treatments are needed?

It is anticipated 2-4 treatments may be required, depending on the condition being treated and the severity of the condition. Treatments are generally performed every 3-4 weeks. Additional treatments may be done at periodic intervals as recommended by your doctor.
